Friends are members of our family we chose ourselves
Yes, definitely I count myself lucky, but I know that in the game of life, luck rarely shows its head. To have a friend, one must be willing to be one. It looks simple enough, yet highly contagious — a friend is one that helps you be a better version of yourself.
What Are Your Friends Like?
I have supportive, plain and down to earth friends. They are just themselves, no air of hypocrisy, practical and truthful. And that makes me appreciate and thankful for the safety and comfort they provide, especially in time of my stormy sea of life.
I know they understand me, encourage me to be me. We weigh all the options together, the pros and the cons, and they let me decide on the one that I believe in. They offer advice but ensure the decision is mine alone, and they support my decision.
Each time I mentioned that I have good friends, my sister always responded that I am a good friend to them too. I sat down and probe those attributes I admire in my friends, and these three stand out:
Their presence around me is hugely comforting. This is difficult to explain, but I always feel secure and reassured in a sort of way that is indescribable.
I feel I can always open up - all to them, about my struggles, relationship, career, family-wise etc. Absolutely nothing is hidden from them because I am confident their genuity is real.
They want me to be the best, they are not in any competition with me whatsoever. They delight in my progress and happiness. This assurance boosts my inner strength and fulfilment.
So what types of friends do you surround yourself with? Do they measure up with my three points above? If they do, count yourself blessed and be thankful.
If not, examine your own attitude in friendship. Are you able to be that supportive — with the three points above? Remember what the Great Teacher said,
‘’Give and it will be given unto you. A good measure pressed down, shaken together and running over will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’’ Luke 6:38
