(It is what you need to transform your life)
What do we do when we are in a situation that cannot be immediately changed, for instance, relationship breakdown, loss of a job or any other important issue of life, or those that can never be reversed like the death of a loved one? Surely we feel defenceless, lost and helpless. This is natural but how long are we to feel that way, and what do we do to get things back into shape? Do we succumb to the human inclination of self-pity or give up? It is this kind of crossroad that we need to know how to deal with.
Helplessness is terrifying to most of us because we are unable to endure it. This is because we know we have lost control and therefore feel inadequate. Naturally, as humans, we want to always be in control or feel that we are in control at all times. What do we do or to turn and whether we want it or not? It is something that will crop up time and time again in our lives.
Helplessness Is Written In The Fabric Of Life
At the initial stage, we are kind of dumbfounded, with a mental hiatus of not knowing what to do. Usually, our cry for God begins at the point of need. It is at the crossroad of helplessness, that we can see our desperate need for HELP!, HELP!! AND MORE HELP!!!. Help from anyone who can show us the direction, and help us out of the ‘’ mess’’ we are in. It does not matter whether we believe in God or not. We are desperate, we want to believe there’s a superpower who can help us.
‘’Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. Only he who is helpless can truly pray. Your helplessness is your best prayer.’’ Ole Hallesby
Crises bring us face to face with our inadequacy, which most of us naturally resist. We tell ourselves there’s nothing we can do literarily, however this is not the case in real life. Our insufficiency brings us to the inexhaustible sufficiency of God. We can see our inadequacy, but we know God is adequate. This is the power of helplessness, a principle written in the fabric of life.
Again, helplessness creates the need, nullify man’s self-sufficiency and I can handle it alone. Rather it whispers that God is adequate for us, our problems inclusive. We must take nourishment from the source of life or ‘die’ out. Consider this verse:
‘’I am the vine, you are the branches. Unless attached, the branches must wither and die.’’ John 15:5
When we take a critical look at our lives, we realise that there are so many issues that are out of our control, despite being wanting to be in control at all times. The race and country we are born into, the fact that we all grow old automatically and must die, despite (the huge medical breakthrough). That must be giving us a message, sort of.
Creativity Arises Out Of The Pit
Those of us in the writers’ world will testify how we are able to ‘’MOLD’’ our challenges into wonderful stories that inspire and educate. Most of these challenges are the result of brokenness, helplessness and suffering compelling us to assess the decision on hand, rethink and start anew. That is what we need to do when we are helpless. But before then we need to go within for an answer.
The Hidden Splendour Within
I can assure you that you have all the answers within you if you consciously acknowledge and has the conviction of this power within you. You are equipped with this power. You have an ever-present Grace to live your life to the full. You are bathed in love, as long as you are open to receive it. How do you receive? It is by allowing Grace and Love to penetrate the conditions around you.
‘’The feeling of helplessness in us has arisen from our deliberate dismissal of God from our common affairs.’’ Mahatma Ghandi
Decision That Makes Life Better
When we are calmer and in a reflective mood, we are able to think straight, answers will open up for us. We have to take a decision to get out of the situation on hand. BUT HOW? The most important issue here is to ensure the decision you take is what is right both for you and the situation on hand. Many of us base our decision on NOT necessary what is right to us, but what we believe we are obliged to do. This definitely is not the time to try to please anyone, (they are sometimes not worth it), and will not be worth it if all we want to do is to please to our own detriment.
All Work Together For Good
The promise that all work together for good depends on how we take up the challenges that are thrown at us. Helplessness does open our spiritual eyes to our calling by way of service. If we are helpless, there are somethings we might not be able to achieve without that helplessness. A good example is a couple who initially were able to adopt an orphan and provide family stability because of their inability to have a child. They later saw this as a spiritual service they want to engage in and went ahead to bring in three more orphans to complete their family. Five years down the line, after their last boy came home, set up a charity that provides advice and support for those willing to adopt, specifically from orphanages.
The circumstances we so much hate and complain about, and the humiliation is all path of our growth, (otherwise it will not be there), that is if we are humble and patient enough to learn from them. This is because when the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
‘’When we are ready for something seemingly more important, life will provide us with the opportunity’’ Ivy Northage
If we accept that there is a Divine purpose, we will be more than willing to take in the lesson, our helplessness brings. Then our helplessness becomes a privilege of service both to ourselves and to those around us.
